How to choose books your child can read:
Your child is ready to read books from the library. Studies show that children will learn to read better if they read books that they can read with 90-94% accuracy. The key to this is selecting books for your child that have 3-4 new words per book.
If the books are too hard, the children become frustrated and are not able to apply the strategies they have learned. If the books are too easy, they are not learning new words or vocabulary. A book which has a 90% reading ability (3-4 new words) will enable your child to learn the new words while practicing important reading strategies. Your child should reread each book to develop fluency.
Open new books to a page and read to assess the readability of the book.
It is important that children are reading for comprehension. Be sure to have him/her retell the story. Ask comprehension questions that help them think more critically.
Don't forget to read to them. This enables them to to learn vocabulary and listen critically to books that are beyond their reading ability. It also creates memories that will last a lifetime.
