2nd Trimester

Guides
Welcome to the 2nd trimester
at Lakeview!
The Physical Education
teachers for the 6th graders are Mr. Dvorak, Mr. Dodd, and Mrs.
Andreatta. Although students have one of these teachers on their
schedule, they receive grades from all three. Grades are based
on skill improvement, daily work, written tests, and fitness work.
Motor development activities
for this trimester include:
 |
Square
and Line Dance: We will work on step patterns for various
square and line dances. Square dance steps include promenade,
allemande left and right, grand right and left, do-si-do, swings,
stars, an understanding of home position, and various others.
Line dances will include learning the grapevine step to be used
in the Electric Slide and Slappin' Leather. |
 |
Inline
skating: When we get back to school from winter break, we
will spend a week working on balance and form in inline skating.
This is a coordination exercise in which we show up the teachers. |
 |
During basketball
we will work on the skills of dribbling, passing, and shooting.
We will try to put these skills into a game. |
|
|
Floor
hockey will stress safe stick handling and offensive and
defensive play. |
 |
In wellness training
we will continue to work on correct weight lifting technique,
along with learning major muscle groups and how to strengthen
them. |
 |
Let it snow, let it
snow, let it snow. And if it does, we will go outside to cross
country ski. We own our own skis, so have hats and gloves in
your locker and be ready to go if it snows. We work on balance
and poling techniques. It sure is nice to get outside in the
winter. |
In addition to movement
studies, students receive grades on fitness activities:
 |
Jump roping grades
are based on skill improvement. Students work on jumping forward
and backward, on one foot and two, using a variety of jumps and
resting moves. |
 |
Our second cardio cross training
activity is a 10 minute run once a week. Students wear heart
monitors and work on pacing and staying in their target heart
rate zones. The monitors tell students if they should be working
a little harder or if they should slow down, because it's just
as important not to overdo it as it is to work hard enough. Each
run is worth 10 points and students receive one point for each
minute in the target zone. Here
is a copy of the running record sheet. |
 |
Step aerobics grades
are based on keeping time to the music and following directions.
Our steps are the same ones used in health clubs, as are the
moves we do. This is a new experience and can be very tricky
for our students. Some catch on quickly and some don't but it
really is getting better. |
