Welcome to 8th grade at Lakeview!
The 8th grade teachers are Mr. Dvorak, Mr. Dodd, and Mrs. Andreatta. Our curriculum for the first trimester includes track, golf, football, bowling, and volleyball, in addition to fitness activites. Activity grades are based on daily work, skill improvement, and written tests.
In track and field the concepts of starts, running, relay handoffs, high jump, shot put, and long jump are stressed. |
Golf is one of our life skills activites and we hope to promote interest in the game so that students may continue on their own to develop their skills and have a life long activity. We continue to stress grip, stance. amd posture, while working on the short swing and full swing. The rules of golf are worked on as students play the Lakeview National Golf Course (our own signature course!). We use different formats of scoring, such as stroke play, match play, scramble, and best ball. |
We will do a field trip to Zigfield Troy for an extended class period. Those who are capable will get the opportunity to play the course. All other will split their time between the driving range and miniature golf. |
The following extra credit is available: hit a bucket of balls at a driving range and/or play a round of golf. |
As part of the golf test, students will design a nine-hole golf course. Each "hole" needs to include: a tee box, fairway, green, par and yardage indicator, and additional things such as sand traps, water, and trees. |
Flag football is the next activity, with passing, catching and pass patterns as our main points. Check the rules (girls) out. We play 4 downs to score. See also football rules (boys). |
Football extra credit: watch one quarter of a game and outline the plays, such as, run, run, pass, punt, runback, pass, pass, field goal, kick off. |
In volleyball we will be working on passing, setting, serving, spiking and offensive tactics. Click on volleyball rules to see the rules of the game. Also see the ten commandments of volleyball. |
In bowling we stress the approach and release and scorekeeping. We will do a field trip to a bowling alley to practice our skills. See bowling rules for a study guide. |
Fitness concepts are also part of our curriculum. We do aerobic workouts two times a week. These include jump roping, step aerobics, and 15 minute runs.
Besides being an aerobic workout, jump roping's focus is on combining skills in sequence to incorporate into a routine to be performed during the third trimester. |
Step aerobics also builds cardio endurance while working toward the ability to combine moves into a sychronized routine. |
Running is a cardio activity during which students are asked to maintain a steady pace in the target heart rate zone. The concepts of pacing and perceived exertion are stressed. Students wear heart monitors to help them maintain a steady pace. Each run is worth 1 point for every minute in the target zone for a total of 15 points each week. |
