8th Grade Activities

2nd Trimester

Study Guides

Our curriculum for the second trimester includes dance, weight training, basketball, rollerblading, bags, pickleball, and table tennis, in addition to fitness activites. Activity grades are based on daily work, skill improvement, and written tests. Students will also be required to develop an individual fitness plan. 8th graders will also have the opportunity to go downhill skiing at Villa Olivia. This is an optional field trip and not a day off from school. Students not choosing to go on the field trip are to report to school.

We finished up bowling and volleyball with a trip to AMF bowling lanes in Bolingbrook.

Our ballroom dance unit will concentrate on rumba, tango, cha cha, and swing, under the guidance of Mrs. Ann Garvey, a professional ballroom dance instructor. Mrs. Garvey teaches 3 days a week. The other two days we review, in hopes of improving our dancing skills. We will end this unit with our big dance on the day before winter break. This is a semi-dress-up affair, which means, shirts, slacks, sweaters, skirts, and dresses. The dance will take place in the old gym, with appetizers provided by the PTO. (Thanks PTO!!) The dance starts about 1:15 and goes until 3:00. Come and watch. We are really great!

During basketball we will work on the principles of offense and defense.

Rules.

Wellness will concentrate on fitness principles, major muscle groups, and strengthening and stretching activities for these groups. 8th graders will need to develop an individual fitness plan for cardio-respiratory endurance, flexibility, and muscular strength and endurance (abdominals and upper body) that they will implement and then assess 3rd trimester. This plan is worth 50 points.

We will be inline skating in January for fun and balance

BAGGO Students will be playing Bags as part of our "recreation" unit. We use official BAGGO game boards and students compete with each other and keep their own scores!

Fitness concepts are also part of our curriculum. We do aerobic workouts two times a week. These include jump roping, step aerobics, and 15 minute runs.

Besides being an aerobic workout, jump roping's focus is on combining skills in sequence to incorporate into a routine to be performed during the third trimester.

Step aerobics also builds cardio endurance while working toward the ability to combine moves into a sychronized routine.

Running is a cardio activity during which students are asked to maintain a steady pace in the target heart rate zone. The concepts of pacing and perceived exertion are stressed. Students wear heart monitors to help them maintain a steady pace. Each run is worth 1 point for every minute in the target zone.
