BASKETBALL—7 and 8

A basketball team has 5 people on it.

A field goal from inside the 3-point circle counts for 2 points.

A field goal from outside the 3-point circle counts for 3 points.

A free throw counts for 1 point.

The game starts with a JUMP BALL.  There is only one jump ball in the game.   After the first jump ball, if two opposing players are holding the ball, one team takes it out of bounds for a throw-in.  The next time two opponents hold the ball, the other team takes it out.  This is called ALTERNATE POSSESSION.

The team with the ball is on OFFENSE.

The team without the ball is on DEFENSE.

A throw-in is used to put the ball in play after a basket or when one team does something wrong (called a violation).

VIOLATIONS are traveling, double dribbling, holding the ball more than 5 seconds, 3-second lane.

FOULS happen when you hit someone from the other team.  Free throws are given for fouls.

There are two kinds of defense:  ZONE and PLAYER TO PLAYER.

In a zone you guard an area and get the ball when it comes there.

In player to player you guard a person.

On a jump ball, the jumpers face the basket at which they are shooting.

Stepping with one foot once or more than once in any direction is called a PIVOT.  When doing a pivot, the other foot must stay in the same spot on the floor.

The basket you are shooting at is in your FRONT COURT.

The basket you are guarding is in your BACK COURT.

After the other team makes a basket, you have 10 seconds to bring the ball from the backcourt, over the center (10 second) line, and into your frontcourt.
