SQUARE DANCE

1. There are 4 couples in a square.

2. The lady is always to the man's right.

3. The corner is on the other side of each person.

4. The "lady on your right" is the lady in the couple to the right of each man (not his partner).

5. Couple #1 has their backs to the music. 3

6. Couples are numbered counterclockwise: 4 2

7. Head couples are #1 and #3. 1

8. Side couples are #2 and #4.

9. Promenade is done counterclockwise.

10. Allemande means join hands, turn the person around, and come back to your place.

11. Do-si-do means pass right shoulder to right shoulder, back to back, left shoulder to left shoulder.

12. Grand right and left starts with your right hand. Ladies go clockwise and men go counterclockwise.

13. Home position is the place where you start each dance.

14. Ladies chain--ladies shake right hands in the middle, left     hand to the boy across from them. Chain home means repeat it and come back to your partner.

15. A square dance has 4 parts:

                        Introduction--example: all join hands and circle left

                        Main figure --example: pass the left hand lady under

                        Break --example: swing and promenade or grand right and left

                        Ending --example: allemande left, grand right & left

16. Examples of square dances are: Hot Time, Texas Star, Pass the Left Hand Lady Under.

17. Example of a double circle: Heel and Toe.

18. Example of a line dance is: Virginia Reel, DC Stroll.

19. Example of single circle: Oh Johnny.

  1. A four-wall dance means you turn and face all 4 walls during the dance. Examples of a 4 wall dance are the Electric Slide and Slappin' Leather.
