6th Grade Basketball

The game of basketball is played with 5 players on each team.  The game begins

with a jump ball.

The three basic skills to master in basketball are dribbling, passing, and shooting.

Shooting is the hardest skill to master.

In the game of basketball, the rim of the basket is 10 feet high and the free throw

lane is 15 feet away from the basket.

On defense the are three basic principles:

  1. Always know where the ball is;

  1. Stay between the ball, the person you are guarding, and the basket;

  1. Block out and rebound when the shot goes up.

Some basic violations in basketball are traveling,  double dribble,  3 seconds, 5

seconds, and 10 seconds.

A field goal on a shot counts 2 or 3 points and a free throw counts 1 point.
