Social Emotional Learning at Home
How can you extend Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into your home? While school is explicitly teaching the SEL five competencies (Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, Self Awareness, and Responsible Decision-Making), it's best internalized when students experience this naturally and purposefully.

To extend SEL into your home:

  • Create avenues for learning - use your family experiences as conversation opportunities. How does your child act in public settings, with peers and adults? Use this as a teachable moment. Remember to celebrate growth over time!
  • Read books together and talk about the social situations in the story. What are the characters doing? How are they feeling? What language are they using?
  • Anticipate and preview experiences. This will help your child recognize their own feelings and prepare for a situation.
  • Listen! When your child is having a difficult time, take the time to listen. Validate their feelings and together come up with a plan to move forward.
  • Reflect. As world experiences happen, take the time to engage your child in a reflective conversation about the situation. Model your use of feelings as well as problem-solving skills.
  • Self-talk. When you are feeling frustrated, model for your child your own coping skills.
  • Build up your child! Embrace a growth mindset! Shine a light on your child's past successes during times of struggles.

Honoring our Veterans in District 66
Once again this year, District 66 proudly celebrated Veterans Day by focusing on the meaning and significance of Veterans Day with flag ceremonies, assemblies, and classroom activities. Veterans were invited by students and staff to participate in special assemblies at each of the three schools. Thank you to all of the veterans and their families that attended! We were honored to share this important day with you and show our gratitude to all veterans for their service and sacrifice.

Lakeview Musicians Selected to Area Honors BandILMEA
Congratulations to three of our finest instrumental music students on being selected to the Illinois Music Educators (ILMEA) District 1 Honors Band. Isabella Salvino (8th grade clarinet), Jessica Ford (7th grade flute), and Lucas Ciocan (8th grade tenor sax) were selected for two of the ILMEA Honors Ensembles. In late September, several students from Lakeview took on the challenge to audition for a spot in the ILMEA Jr. Honors Concert Band and Jazz Band.

Over 1,200 students from the surrounding area competed for a spot in either the Jr. Honors Band, Orchestra, or Choir. Less than a third of the students were selected to be a part of one of the ensembles. Isabella and Jessica were selected to the District 1 Honors Concert Band, while Lucas was selected to the District 1 Honors Jazz Band.

Isabella and Jessica performed for a packed house at Joliet Central High School on Saturday, November 9th. Lucas performed at Oak Lawn High School on Saturday, November 16th. Congratulations to these fine young musicians on their hard work and dedication!

"Giving Thanks" at Prairieview
Research tells us that a daily gratitude practice helps reduce stress, improve focus, and build healthy relationships with others. During the month of November, Prairieview students were given a Gratitude Calendar and encouraged to notice the "little things" and practice gratitude each day. A "Giving Thanks" Celebration was held on November 26th to celebrate those Panthers who practiced gratitude for 18 days. Thank you to our SEL team for promoting/providing such a fun and meaningful opportunity to showcase SEL (gratitude) and to bring us together as a Panther community!
