Message Regarding Netflix Show, “13 Reasons Why”
I would like to share some information about the recently released Netflix show called “13 Reasons Why.” It has become a topic in social media and, therefore, also a topic of conversation among some of our older students. I would like to make you aware of the sensitive and mature topics covered in the show in case your children are watching it.

The show is about a teenager who commits suicide and details the reasons why she took her own life. While the show is based on a book of the same name written for young adults, it targets an older audience. The show is rated TV-MA/Mature Audiences Only, which means it is designed to be viewed by adults only and may be inappropriate for children under 17.

If you are interested in additional information, the following resources have been suggested. Click here for information from the JED Foundation and click here for information from the National Association of School Psychologists.

Our school social workers are always available to assist students at each of our schools. Please feel free to reach out if we can help support your child.

Sincerely,

Tim Arnold, Ph.D.
Superintendent

New Elizabeth Ide Principal Named for 2017-18

Center Cass welcomes Sean Rhoads as Principal of Elizabeth Ide beginning July 1, 2017. Mr. Rhoads brings a tremendous amount of passion and energy to the students and staff of Ide School. As a current assistant principal of a large K-2 school in Frankfort School District 157-C, Mr. Rhoads is knowledgeable of the unique learning and social-emotional needs of our early childhood students. Mr. Rhoads' background experiences and engaging nature enabled him to rise to the top of a qualified field of 87 applicants, six of whom were interviewed by over 30 teachers, parents, and administrators.

As a former special education teacher, Mr. Rhoads earned the 2010 Outstanding Teacher Award by the Downers Grove Junior Women's Club and was a nominee for the 2008 Distinguished Service Award by the District 58 Education Foundation. Mr. Rhoads' current school earned the 2015 Schools to Watch designation by the National Forum of Schools to Watch.

After having nearly all of the teachers at Ide School participate in the final round of interviews, it is safe to say that the engaging and meaningful activities that Mr. Rhoads used with the staff left all involved with a high level of excitement and anticipation for the 2017-18 school year.

Mr. Rhoads is excited to become part of Elizabeth Ide's journey in providing a quality educational environment for all students in partnership with family and community. He is committed to the district's mission of “challenging, inspiring, and empowering each of our learners every day.”
