Grading Policy 8 th Grade Science

Your science grade each trimester will be based on the following Criteria:

•  The percent of maximum points gained from all graded assignments

•  Classroom participation and cooperation

•  Proper organization of all science materials

•  Completion of assignments on time

•  Extra Credit

Syllabus

A weekly syllabus will be handed out and provided to students and guardians.

Note: The weekly syllabus is subject to change.

Lab Reports

Each student will be required to hand in 1 Lab Report during the 2 nd and 3 rd trimesters. It is the students' responsibility to choose one lab experiment per 2 nd and 3 rd trimester done in class to support with a thorough lab report. Information and handouts on what is expected will be given to the students at the beginning of the 2nd trimester.

Assessments

Each unit covered in class will have a test or alternative assessment. Quizzes may be given for each unit, but every quiz will be announced. NO POP QUIZZES WILL BE GIVEN IN SCIENCE!

Late Assignments

Late work is not tolerated in this classroom. Every student will be expected to turn in assignments the day the assignment is due. I understand special circumstances will arise and will be addressed at that time.

•  Classroom policy-All late assignments are worth 50%. If assignments are not turned in PRIOR to the assessment/test given for that unit, a zero will be given for that assignment. All completion grades are due THAT DAY, otherwise a zero will be given for that assignment. Completion grades include assignments discussed that day in class.

Absences

If a student is absent on the day an assignment is given or is due, an allowance of the absent days will be given as a grace period in order to complete the work before it is considered late. For example, if a students is absent on Tuesday and an assignment is given that is due Wednesday, then that student would have the assignment due on Thursday with no penalty. There is a “absent file” drawer next to the teacher's desk that has all work completed and filed daily. Students must check this file folder for missed information and assignments. If confusion, the student MUST communicate with the teacher immediately following the absent. Special arrangements will be made for students that have extended absences in accordance with school policy.

Make Up Laboratory Experiments

Due to the complexity of experiments handled in the 8 th Grade, lab days will only be made up if materials are available. If so, each student will have a week to make up the lab. It is the students' responsibility to schedule a time with the teacher. If a lab is unable to be made up, it is the students' obligation to obtain all notes and data from a classmate.

Make Up Tests and Assignments

If you miss any graded assignments or test due to an absence, it is your responsibility to find out about the assignment by seeing the teacher, checking the “absent file” drawer, or checking the Homework Hotline number (985-8306). All assignments and tests can be made up without penalty within the allotted time frame.

Grading

All students are required to keep a grade sheet, given to them by the teacher, in their science folders. It will be their responsibility to keep track of their grades throughout each trimester. Time will be given in class to copy grades onto their grade sheets when assignments and exams are handed back.
