Center Cass School District 66 recently shared an executive summary of the curriculum review conducted by engage2learn at the August 5th Board meeting highlighting the district’s impressive work in establishing a Competency-Based Education system. Across classrooms, teachers and staff demonstrate exceptional dedication to challenging, inspiring, and empowering students through high-quality learning experiences. Classroom observations revealed strong instructional practices where students actively engage in intellectual work, explain their reasoning, and solve real-world problems. Assessment practices across the district thoughtfully emphasize evidence of understanding rather than simply finding correct answers. The review celebrated the tremendous ownership shown by educators, instructional coaches, and interventionists, whose collaborative work and high expectations have built a solid foundation for student success.
Looking ahead over the next three to five years, the district has a valuable opportunity to build on these achievements by creating greater coherence across grade levels. The primary recommendations focus on strengthening district wide curriculum pacing guides and learning progressions so that every student experiences a seamless path toward mastery from kindergarten through eighth grade. Additionally, the district plans to continue investing in multi-year professional learning and instructional coaching to support teachers as they collaborate and refine their practices. By maintaining this strong commitment to continuous improvement and staff development, District 66 is well-positioned to ensure a consistent, high-quality educational journey for all children.
